Suresmile Dentist Grand Rapids Mi

Thinking about getting started SureSmile® clear aligners but aren’t quite sure what to expect? If you’re considering a more discreet and flexible alternative to braces, you’re not alone. Our Grand Rapids SureSmile dentist has helped many teen and adult patients straighten their teeth and fix bite issues without the brackets and wires of traditional orthodontics. Clear aligners offer a proven system that helps guide your teeth into proper alignment using thin custom-made trays.

Here’s a general preview of what is involved in SureSmile treatment.

SureSmile Candidacy & Consultation

Determining whether SureSmile aligners are right for you is a crucial first step in achieving the best outcome. Teens and adults with mild to moderate malocclusion (misalignment) are ideal candidates for SureSmile, though we stress that anyone considering this type of treatment remains committed. The removability of the aligners can be tempting if you’re not all in!

To start, our SureSmile dentist will perform a comprehensive dental consultation where we’ll take photos and a digital scan of your teeth. Factors such as the degree of misalignment and overall oral health will also be taken into account at this time.

Unless your case is severe and requires a referral to a local orthodontist, our dentist will move forward with the next steps which involve the development of a custom treatment plan and aligner fabrication. In general, the consultation process helps to ensure that you receive a clear understanding of what to expect while also asking any questions that come to mind.

Wearing Your Aligners

When your first set of aligners arrives back from the lab, you’ll be expected to wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day. The aligners should only be removed when eating, drinking anything besides water, or brushing your teeth. Wearing SureSmile aligners as instructed is critical to staying on schedule and achieving the results you want. Every one to two weeks, you’ll switch to a new set of trays that gradually move your teeth closer to their ideal positions.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene During Treatment

Starting clear aligner treatment also means stepping up your oral hygiene. Since aligners fit snugly over your teeth, it’s essential to brush and floss after meals and snacks. This attention helps prevent food and bacteria from getting trapped between your teeth and trays, reducing the risk of decay and gum irritation. Cleaning the clear aligner trays themselves is also important. Use a soft toothbrush and cool water to keep them clear and free from buildup. You’ll also want to keep up with professional teeth cleanings inside our Grand Rapids, MI, dental office every 6 months.

Regular Check-Ins & Cleanings

Routine appointments with our dentist are essential to monitor the progress of clear aligner therapy. These appointments typically occur every 6 to 8 weeks. During these visits, we’ll observe your teeth to make sure they are moving as planned and address any concerns you might have. New sets of aligners are also provided during these check-ups.

Occasionally, adjustments or refinements to the treatment plan may be necessary. If we notice at one of your check-ups that the teeth aren’t moving as expected, new digital impressions may be taken to create additional aligners. This step ensures that the treatment stays on track and achieves the best possible results.

Average Treatment Timeline

Most patients are able to complete treatment in 12-18 months. With that said, however, every patient is different so what might take a little over a year for one individual, could take 6-7 months for another. Ultimately, treatment time varies based on the complexity of needed tooth movements.

Once the treatment plan is complete, our dentist will recommend wearing an orthodontic retainer to maintain the new position of the teeth. Retainers are typically worn at night and help prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original positions.
