When you have problems with your teeth, time can be of the essence when it comes to saving your teeth and maintaining great oral health. However, not every little bit of pain or discoloration merits a visit to Dr. Joseph Szymczak.

So to help you keep your oral health where it should be, our team here at MI Roots Family Dental in Grand Rapids, Michigan put this piece together that gives some examples of when you need to seek immediate dental care.

Knocked out teeth

If you have a tooth suddenly get knocked out (during contact sports, for example) then you need to come to MI Roots Family Dental as soon as possible. If you can, you should bring the tooth that was knocked out. Storing it in milk is a great way to keep it alive and clean until our team can assess whether or not the original tooth can go back into its socket.

Chipped teeth

If you chip or crack a tooth, you need to see our team as soon as possible. While it may not seem as serious as having a tooth knocked from its socket, a chipped or cracked tooth presents just as many problems. When a tooth is chipped or cracked, it puts your enamel at risk. Your enamel protects your teeth from cavities and other infections, so the sooner a chip is fixed, the smaller chance you have of getting an infection in your tooth.

If you need to schedule an appointment, call us today at 616-453-0002.

Have you lost one or more permanent teeth because of gum disease, extensive decay, or another issue? Dr. Joseph Szymczak may recommend a dental bridge in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A dental bridge is a restoration that is designed to close the gap in your smile. Your dental bridge can restore your bite and your ability to eat and speak properly. A bridge consists of two or more dental crowns with a replacement tooth in between. The crowns will be placed on the teeth on either side of the gap to anchor the dental bridge.

How Long Will My Dental Bridge Last?
Dental bridges generally last for 5 to 15 years, and can last even longer. With proper dental hygiene and regular dental checkups, a dental bridge will likely last for 10 or more years.

How Do I Care for My Dental Bridge?
To help your dental bridge last, it is important to keep the remaining teeth healthy, especially those on either side of the gap, as they support the dental bridge. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and use mouthwash to help prevent tooth decay and other issues. Also, visit our office often for professional dental cleanings and exams. This allows our dentist to detect and diagnose any dental issues that you have early, when they are still easy to treat. It is also important to have a healthy, balanced diet.

To learn more about dental bridges and how to care for them and to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Joseph Szymczak, we encourage you to contact our dental office today.
