A cavity that forms on a tooth that is visible in your smile can be unsightly and it can impact the way you feel about your outward appearance. In some cases, a small cavity can be repaired with a simple composite or porcelain filling at our dental office. However, a large cavity or a tooth that has a shallow amount of tooth enamel might require a dental crown.

This is a two-stage restoration that involves preparing the questionable tooth for a porcelain dental crown. After a thorough examination to assess the health of the tooth, Dr. Joseph Szymczak will use a drill to remove all the tooth enamel. This leaves behind a dentin pillar abutment that encases the healthy pulp and root of the tooth.

A detailed impression will be made of the abutment and the corresponding teeth in your bite. The impressions will then be sent to a professional dental lab. This will serve as a guide while the technicians meticulously create your porcelain crown.

At the end of the appointment, your dentist will secure a temporary crown over the abutment to keep it safe.

Once the dental lab technician has completed it, we will call you back into our office to cement the porcelain crown directly onto the anchoring abutment.

If you live in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area and you have a cavity on a tooth in your smile, you should call 616-453-0002 to seek treatment at our dental office.

Many people feel that a winning smile serves them well in social functions. Yet a tooth that has been dulled by stains, chips or unsightly old fillings can often leave you wanting to explore your restoration options. Sometimes this can be as simple as having Dr. Mark Osenieks restore one or more unappealing teeth with a porcelain or porcelain fused to metal crown.

A crown essentially replaces the enamel layer with an artificial material. Most of the time a crown on a tooth in your smile will call for using porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. The process starts with Dr. Mark Osenieks removing the entire enamel layer of the tooth. This leaves behind a post-like abutment that encases the pulp and root of the tooth.

A detailed impression is made of the area, which is sent to our dental lab. This will serve as a guide while they custom craft a porcelain tooth to replicate the original. Then, Dr. Osenieks will secure a hard plastic temporary crown over the abutment to protect it. When your new crown is ready, we will call you back into the office to have the temporary crown removed and cement the porcelain crown in place.

If you have an unappealing tooth in your smile, we invite you to call our dedicated dental team in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at 616-453-0002 to have it restored with a custom porcelain crown. We are here to help you have a healthy, confident smile!

Despite your best efforts, your tooth may become damaged or discolored. Because of an injury, your tooth may become chipped, cracked, or broken. Perhaps you have decay or a large dental filling that has severely weakened your tooth. In some cases, a tooth may be irregularly shaped or discolored. A patient with any of these dental problems can receive an improved smile by way of a dental crown. There is no need to suffer with any of these tooth problems for long.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over your tooth to repair and strengthen it. Dental crowns are used by dentists to restore teeth. Dental crowns can restore or fix the shape, size, strength, or appearance of your tooth. Your dental crown can save your tooth by doing one or more of the following:

• Protect your tooth from breaking if it is weak
• Restore your tooth if it is broken or worn down
• Cover, protect, and support your tooth if it has a large dental filling
• Cover a tooth that is misshapen or stained
• Improve the appearance of a tooth

Ask our dentist about your options with a dental crown and how a dental crown can help you.
